As I continue to struggle with onycholysis (medical name for the separation of my nails from the nail bed) my three year old border collie, Boo Radley, has developed a “sympathy nail.”  Many dogs have these long nails that stick out from the side of their paws called “dew claws.” I’m not sure how it happened, but Boo’s right dew claw is partially ripped away and is Dew Clawcausing him a lot of discomfort.  The danger is that he will catch it on something and lose it in a painful way.  I fear this for the both of us.  I’ve almost torn one of mine off half a dozen times.

Of course, since he’s a border collie, he’s not going to let it stop him from running.  My own breed, the North American Bald-headed Jew, is very similar.  When I have energy, I tend to overdue it. Last week I might have done too much, but it was so nice to have real energy for the first time in a long time.  So, today, I’m dog-tired and need to rest up for the week ahead.  I have a few appointments coming up – with my radiology oncologist to talk about starting radiation and sessions with a physical and occupational therapist. And I will probably have to take Boo to the vet. I’m hoping he doesn’t end up in one of those “cones of shame.” That just might be worse than wearing a wig!
